KDS offers a wide
range of interests
to its students as
well as its
supporters. If you
are interested in
making a
contribution to the
school, you may
choose the area you
feel most strongly
about. It takes all
of us to insure the
continued success of
our programs. What
part would you like
to play?
Monetary donations
in any amount are
most needed. DAR
members may make
their contributions
through their state
treasurer designated
to KDS. Alumni,
community members,
friends or other
organizations may
send their donations
directly to the
school. Remember
that when money is
given designated for
a specific fund, it
must be spent for
that purpose.
Read on to see the
many opportunities
to enhance the
programs in place at
Kate Duncan Smith
DAR School.

Educational
Projects- KDS
has many projects
directly related to
enhancing the
education of our
students. For
example, the Art
Department, Band,
Choir, Drama Club,
Family and Consumer
Sciences Department,
Agri-Science
Department, Science
Labs, Libraries and
Computer Labs are
always in need of
new teaching
equipment and
supplies. |
Character and
Encouragement-
Teaching character
and encouraging
students to strive
for excellence may
be supported through
our Awards Program
or Junior American
Citizens Club. There
are awards given for
all academic
subjects, performing
arts, visual arts,
citizenship, and
many others.

Christmas and
Student Health Funds
-
You may have a
desire to help a
child celebrate
Christmas through a
gift to the
Christmas Fund. Or
you may be
interested in
helping with medical
and dental needs of
students through
contributions to the
Helen Pouch Memorial
Fund or the Alabama
Children's Fund.
|
Endowment Fund-
Investing in the
future of KDS may be
your goal. You may
help insure income
to KDS for years to
come by making a
contribution to the
Endowment Fund.
Interest from this
fund is used in the
General Operating
Fund and the
principal is never
spent.

Annual
Fund- There is
always a great need
for donations to the
Annual Fund. This
fund pays expenses
such as salaries and
payroll taxes,
utilities,
accounting fees,
travel expenses,
insurance for
vehicles and
buildings,
maintenance and
repair, office
supplies and
postage,
professional
development,
promotional expense,
technology upgrades,
vehicle expenses,
and new equipment.
This fund also picks
up the expense for
anything our
students need if
specific funds have
not been donated. |
Campus
Restoration-
Your interest may be
in the restoration
and beautification
of campus buildings
and grounds. Funds
are needed to
replace overgrown
shrubbery with new
plantings that are
indigenous to the
mountain. Funds are
also needed to
replace existing
rock pathways and
sidewalks. You can
help by making a
gift to the KDS Land
Restoration Fund
that will be used
for the upkeep and
beautification of
the campus.

College
Scholarship Funds-
If you are
enthusiastic about
helping deserving
students continue
their education
after high school,
you may want to
consider providing a
college scholarship.
Read below for
details of
scholarship funds. |
Work Scholarship
Fund- Students
hold after school
and summer jobs on
campus helping with
maintenance,
tutoring and
clerical duties.
Often this money is
used by the students
to subsidize family
income.

Kate Duncan
Smith DAR School
College Scholarship
Program
The college
scholarship program
at KDS is an
instrumental part of
the total school
program.
Scholarships are
sponsored by
individuals, DAR
chapters, DAR state
organizations, and
the NSDAR. These
scholarships provide
needy and deserving
students with
financial aid for
tuition and books so
they may attend
college.
Many of our children
graduate from KDS
with exemplary
GPA's, outstanding
ACT scores, and the
knowledge and
determination it
takes to obtain a
college degree, but
without the means to
pursue it. Because
of the outstanding
academic training
they receive at KDS,
those students who
seek a college
degree are highly
successful. The
College Scholarship
Program enables many
of our students to
realize their dream
of a college
diploma.
Naming a
Scholarship
Each scholarship
is named by the
sponsor. You may
wish to name your
scholarship in honor
or in memory of
someone, yourself,
or your chapter or
group.
How to
Establish a College
Scholarship at KDS
College
scholarships are
established in two
ways, endowments and
annual giving.
Endowments are
sent to the school
and invested in the
KDS College
Scholarship
Endowment Fund. The
principal endowed
is never touched,
but the interest
earned is used to
fund the
scholarship. The
amount of the
scholarship would
vary each year as to
the amount of
interest earned.
Endowment
Scholarships ensure
that the gift will
be available for
perpetuity.
An Annual Giving
Program is the
second way to
establish a
scholarship at KDS.
Funds for the
scholarship are sent
to KDS prior to
April of each year
and awarded in May
at Awards Day. Due
to the increased
cost of a college
education, a $500.00
minimum scholarship
is recommended. The
disadvantage to this
program is that the
school does not know
if the scholarship
will continue from
year to year, and
once the sponsor
stops sending money,
the scholarship is
discontinued.
The Kate Duncan
Smith DAR School has
a DAR Scholarship
Committee which
meets three times
yearly to consider
scholarship
applications.
Members of the
committee include
the DAR Board
Chairman, the
Executive Director,
the High School
Principal, and the
High School Guidance
Counselor. The
committee is
governed by a set of
guidelines. In
establishing a
scholarship, the
sponsor may add
other guidelines if
they desire. All
sponsors are
notified of the
recipient and
forwarded a picture
of the student
receiving the award.
You may also help
provide college
scholarships with
gifts of less than
$500.00 by giving to
our DAR
Scholarship Fund.
This fund is named
in honor of the many
Daughters who so
unselfishly continue
to provide for this
wonderful college
scholarship program. |
